Saturday mornings are super again. Harkening back to the glory days the 1970s and '80s when kids got their weekends going with Super Friends and School House Rock, Cartoon Network is launching DC Nation, a programming block that showcases the heroes of the DC Comics library.  Anchoring the hour will be the CGI show Green Lantern: The Animated Series (10am/9c) and the continuation of the first season of Young Justice (10:30am/9:30c). Scattered Throughout the hour are animated shorts and interstitials with news and vignettes from around the DC universe.

Though some of the shorts feature big names like Superman and Batman, many will put the spotlight on "characters we've always wanted to see animated, but that might not be able to support a whole series," says Peter Giardi, senior vice president at Warner Bros. Animation, which is coordinating the block.  Among the second-tier characters featured are Black Lightening, Doctor Fate, the Doom Patrol and even Vibe, a short-lived Latino member of the Justice League in the '80s.

A humorous tone runs through all the shorts, including S.B.F.F. (short for Super Best Friends Forever), which stars Batgirl, Supergirl and Wonder Girl and "has plenty of action and fighting, but is really much more focused on comedy and laughs and how much fun it is to be a superhero," says producer Lauren Faust.  "It's like taking a teenage experience but putting a superhero spin on it, in one episode, Supergirl and Batgirl try to convince Wonder Girl to sneak out in Wonder Woman's invisible jet to go for a joyride."  Guess even supergirls just wanna have fun.  –Rich Sands

Each SBFF short runs just over a minute.  "it's like telling a visual joke," says producer, Lauren Faust.

Please be aware that the first Batman crossover of the DCnU will be occurring at this time.  Check out CBR for the rest of the Batman solicitations for May.

In celebration of Valentine's Day, this is the First Annual Shipper Special.  Think a full-length Shipper Spotlight!  I, along with special guest Donovan Morgan Grant, talk about one of our favorite animated couples: Hawkgirl and Green Lantern from Justice League Animated.  We both give our top five Shipper episodes from the five seasons and discuss why we love them so.

From DC's The Source:

With Jesus Saiz resurrected as Mitch Shelley’s ongoing illustrator, the BIRDS OF PREY need an artist up to the challenge of depicting Gotham City’s finest female fighters. Fresh from The Rot in ANIMAL MAN, artist Travel Foreman takes on urban decay alongside Black Canary, Batgirl, Katana, Poison Ivy and Starling. Beginning with issue #9 in May, the Birds face Talon and the Court of Owls in the epic “Night of the Owls” Bat-family crossover.

“ANIMAL MAN is one of my favorite books of The New 52, in no small part because of Travel’s awesome art,” said BIRDS OF PREY editor Bobbie Chase. “We’re really challenging him to go against his animal instincts in his first issue; from the woods to the city streets, from a single super character (OK, with family) to a team book, from one small corner of the DC universe right into the big Bat landscape. It’s going to be exciting!”

In the meantime, check out the cover to BIRDS OF PREY #9 (by Jesus Saiz) and a new Birds sketch by Foreman.

I begin the episode with some news and comments from viewers…and receive an unsettling threat from Heather Glenn.  I then continue with reviews of Batman Family #13 and #14, Batgirl #4, Birds of Prey #4, Huntress #4, Batman Inc.: Leviathan Strikes, and a short review of Nightwing #4.  Babs in the Tube, a Shipper Spotlight on Cassandra Cain/Superboy, and my literature recommendation finishes off the episode.

From Newsarama.com:

All the writers of the "New 52" comics have been dealing with the challenge of rewriting history within the framework of the universe's new five-year timeline.  For Gail Simone, who's writing the new Batgirl title, that challenge is even greater as she deals with the sensitive subject of Barbara Gordon's seemingly miraculous cure.  Since Batgirl relaunched in September, the book has been slowly revealing evidence about how Barbara's recovery took place. While DC fans saw the transformation from a wheelchair-bound Oracle to the healed Batgirl happened suddenly in September, Simone's story has implied that Batgirl #1 takes place a whole year since her cure. I'm emailing in to let you know about a fan petition to have Batgirl as a DLC character. Right now, Rocksteady has released all their current DLC and are working to make more, and they would like the fan's input! According to the Official Arkham City Message Board polls, right now, most are clamoring for Story Episodes for Robin and Nightwing, similar to what we got for Catwoman. Others want playable characters like Red Hood, Joker, and the domino daredoll herself, Batgirl! While Babs is Oracle in the Arkham-verse, and the most likely candidate is Cassandra, the possibility of skins would allow ALL Batgirls are playable; Babs, Steph, Cass, maybe even Batwoman. (more…)

BIRDS OF PREY #7: The comic for people who think there’s not enough fighting in comics.

From DC Comics The Source:

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

People have been asking me why I’m so quiet when it comes to Birds of Prey. It’s true; I haven’t done many interviews. When friends stop me on the street and ask about the book, I usually scream “HOLY CAT WHAT IS THAT BEHIND YOU” and scramble in the opposite direction. Um, yeah… I’ve been a bit cagey when it comes to this comic. Thing is, while Birds of Prey is about the great characters… it’s also about the surprises, and I’m serious about not wanting to ruin any of the twists and turns that lie ahead.

But last week, when I visited the DC Comics HQ in New York City, my editor Bobbie Chase spiked my Diet Coke, and the last thing I saw was David Hyde filling a syringe with sodium pentothal. Hours later, on my train back to Philly, I realized they’d pried these three details out of me… (more…)

In this episode I answer questions and reply to comments from some new people.  I then review Batman Family #9 and #10 with accompanying letters pages to round out the first half of the episode.  Then I review Batgirl #2, Birds of Prey #2, and Huntress #2.  I wrap up the episode with Babs in the Tube, Shipper Spotlight, and my literature recommendation.

Central Park hasn't been the most inviting land for superheros. The Punisher formed after his family was murdered for witnessing an execution there. The X-Men spent a grey day fighting Dark Phoenix there for the first time. It took the Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men and the Hulk to battle the entity of powerful psychic energy called Onslaught at his fortress in the park. Not even Squirrel Girl could prevent the Black Eyed Peas from performing on the Great Lawn this Saturday. From DC's The Source:

DC Comics – The New 52 and acclaimed writer Duane Swierczynski introduced a bold new take on the BIRDS OF PREY team dynamic – and in the fourth issue, a shocking revelation is going to upset the status quo all over again. Featuring a special guest appearance by Batgirl, the explosive issue’s going to rewrite the rules – so don’t get too comfortable, because anything can happen. (more…)

From DC's The Source:

Like most DC editors, I’m not just an editor – I’m also a fan. And the book that made me a DC fan was BIRDS OF PREY. I’ve read a lot of DC books over the years, but BIRDS is the book that really hooked me. So when we were originally told that DC was bringing back BIRDS OF PREY in 2010, I may have knocked a few people over in claiming editorial rights to the book. I thought I was excited then.

It’s nothing to how excited I am right now.

The new BIRDS OF PREY is thrilling, fun, and beautiful. Writer Duane Swierczynski has crafted a story that takes off from issue one and does not let you stop for breath. It’s a new take on the characters and the team, so both new and old fans will come into the book on equal footing. But the spirit of BIRDS OF PREY – the spirit of doing good against all odds and the spirit of unlikely friendships – that remains in full force. (more…)

From CBR.com:

Though "Justice League debuted last week, this week marks the beginning of DC Comics' full New 52 push, a busy time for both the comic book publisher and for writer Gail Simone. The ex-"Birds Of Prey" and "Secret Six" scribe is penning two new books set in the relaunched DCU: "Batgirl," which sees a non-disabled Barbara Gordon patrolling the streets of Gotham, and "The Fury Of The Firestorm," which marks the continuing adventures of nuclear-powered teens Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch.

While there has been a storm of controversy around the announcement that Barbara Gordon will no longer be wheelchair-confined, Simone and DC have stated that the events of "The Killing Joke" still happened and that "Batgirl" follows Babs after she has healed from being shot by the Joker, fighting crime by night while dealing with post-college life by day.

For her second series, Simone is teaming up with writer Ethan Van Sciver for "Firestorm," which will focus on the Ronnie and Jason as they face a world which fears the Firestorm matrix as well as a mysterious international special forces team that has some nuclear secrets of their own.

Joined by former "Birds Of Prey" artist Ardian Syaf on "Batgirl" and artist Yildiray Çinar on "Firestorm," CBR spoke with Simone about both series, touching on the difference between Batgirl and Oracle, the reasoning behind splitting up the Firestorm power into two people and her own hesitations when it came to the company-wide relaunch. David Macho wraps up a week of DC Comics-sanctioned trailers with a sneak peek at Birds of Prey #1, which relaunches the long-running title under the new creative team of Duane Swierczynski and Jesus Saiz.

One is wanted for a murder she didn’t commit. The other is on the run because she knows too much. They are Dinah Laurel Lance and Ev Crawford – a.k.a. Black Canary and Starling – and together, as Gotham City’s covert ops team, they’re taking down the villains other heroes can’t touch. But now they’ve attracted the attention of a grizzled newspaper reporter who wants to expose them, as well as a creepy, chameleon-like strike team that’s out to kill them.

Birds of Prey #1 goes on sale Sept. 21.

Way back in September of 2009, Bubba Moose leapt onto the scene.  Bubba Moose started building her street cred in 2004, but it was not until she received a spotlight on Spider-Man Crawl Space that she finally became noticed.  Now, for the first time ever, you can own her debut album, Moo$e, Make It Rain!, featuring the following tracks:

1. The Writer

2. The Showdown

3. The Friend

4. The Hero

5. Dirty Stella

Thanks to all the fans that have stuck with her!  Be prepared for more Bubba Moose action down the road!  Moo$e, Make It Rain! was produced by Stella, BD, and JJink$.  Bubba Moose is managed by Bear.

Prepare yourselves for a crazy experience, friends!  The song 'Dirty Stella' starts this episode off with a bang!  I talk about the strange events that have been occurring as of late, and of course I discuss Babs and what I think her role will be in the DCnU.  I then review Batman Family #1 and Batman Family #3.  I delve into new territory when I read the letters pages from Batman Family #3.  You have been warned!  I continue the reviews with Batgirl #23 and Birds of Prey #14, review an episode during Babs in the Tube, and end with my literary recommendation.

From CBR.com:

Shortly after the initial announcement that DC Comics would relaunch its entire line of DC Universe superhero comics with new #1s in September — now referred to as the "New 52" — CBR News ran a survey polling you, our readers, on which titles you were most likely to purchase…and most likely to avoid. The results were interesting, to say the least.

The survey asked how high your interest was for each new comic series on a scale that ran from "Absolutely Purchasing" to "Not Buying At All." And while by no means was the exercise a scientific survey (as David Letterman would say, "Please, no wagering"), the responses seemed to hold true to traditional comics-buying habits of Direct Market fans: big name creators including Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Grant Morrison pulled a strong response closer to the "Absolutely Purchasing" end while titles from lesser known or newly established talents (and featuring lesser known or newly established characters) showed weaker interest.

In the interest of having a more complete picture of fan interest and public debate, CBR launched a second survey Tuesday of this week, polling readers on the exact same questions for the exact same comics. After months of interviews, previews, spoilers and reveals coming from DC, things turned out a bit differently.

While the new survey contained a smaller sample of responders (4,948 people participating versus 10,181 in the first go-round), there were significant changes in the percentages. Of the 52 titles, nearly all saw gains in the "Absolutely Purchasing" category with the only two titles that dropped definite buyers being the best-selling "Green Lantern" and "Green Lantern Corps" titles. "Justice League" from Johns and Lee remains the title with the highest number of committed readers with an additional 9% of fans signing on for a total of 66.4% of respondents clicking that category. Meanwhile, some other titles saw major gains including Morrison and Rags Morales' take on "Action Comics" which jumped over 5% in the category (for a total of 61.1%) and newfound DC superstar writer Scott Snyder's incoming series whose "Batman" and "Swamp Thing" books gained 11% (58% total) and nearly 8% (30% total) respectively.

On the other far end of the spectrum — the "Not At All Purchasing" category — things saw less of a shift. Many titles remained essentially flat on the level of total fan disinterest while those that "made gains" (or rather, had their percentages drop) rarely saw a change greater than 1 to 4%. A few titles saw a greater percentage of respondents click this category (also with very small shifts) including "DC Comics Presents," "Blue Beetle" and "OMAC," which this time held the distinction of having the highest rate of fans totally uninterested in buying the book.

Of course, the full story of whether or not perceptions have been changed falls somewhere in between those two extremes. In the "Very Likely," "Likely" and "Unlikely To Purchase" categories, the survey showed readers shuffling more towards the middle. While gains were made back from the "Unlikely To Purchase" category on the whole, more and more respondents in the other two categories seemed to be abandoning responses where they were leaning towards purchasing certain books in the New 52. In other words, it appears that the majority of readers have definitively made up their minds on what they'll pay for when the new books start rolling out with next week's "Justice League" #1 and beyond.

It should be no surprise how much emotion the news that Babs is Batgirl again has elicited.  Eric Glover has created a campaign known as Barbara's Not Broken because he believes that Babs has more importance in the DCU as Oracle.  You can find out more about the campaign by going to the Facebook page.  Eric has also written an article called 'Give Batgirl the Chair,' which has been featured on BleedingCool.

Here is the op-ed that Eric wrote:

Eric Glover writes for Bleeding Cool;

Ever since DC Comics announced a seismic shakeup of its entire book line for this September, promising a remix of character histories and costume designs to give its universe a more contemporary flavor, the move has sparked an incendiary reaction among readers, with one particular change fanning the most flames: DC’s decision to return the paraplegic Oracle to her previous role as the able-bodied Batgirl. Because of the already slim share of characters living with disabilities in the DC Universe (or DCU), the sudden dismissal of Oracle’s paralysis has not just been a point of contention for some fans, but also a puzzling contradiction to the spirit of DC’s relaunch announcement:

“[The relaunch] will introduce readers to a more modern, diverse DC Universe… All stories will be grounded in each character’s legend—but will relate to real world situations, interactions, tragedy and triumph.” –Bob Wayne, Senior Vice President of Sales at DC Entertainment

But aside from shuffling a few more black characters into the spotlight, DC won’t be making any huge strides forward in diversity, leaving the meat of its heroes classically white, male, heterosexual, and possibly even more able-bodied once the relaunch hits. The loss of diversification offered by Oracle—a hero borne of a “real world” situation both tragic and triumphant in nature—is a disappointing step back for a company that once took pioneering leaps with the Batgirl legacy. In the final days before the launch of the “New 52”, DC marketing is taking it to the Internet. In addition to waves of preview art being distributed by social media over the last week, the publisher is trying something a little new – text teasers.

DC has released 52 teaser quotes, or “one-liners” each apparently from one of each of the first issues of the 52 new series, that “set up the themes of their corresponding series, hint at the unexpected return of fan-favorite characters and allude to significant changes.”

This interview is taken from CBR.com:

As DC Comics fans know by now, this September the comic book publisher is undergoing a massive, company-wide relaunch of all its comic book series. With 52 new and rebooted titles set to release in a single month, one of the biggest controversies coming out of the relaunch has been the decision to reinstate Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, effectively ending the reign of Stephanie Brown as Gotham's female Caped Crusader.

This is not the first time the character of Stephanie Brown has been embroiled in controversy, however. Indeed, it has dogged Stephanie for most of her history, from her 1998 teen pregnancy storyline in "Robin" to the lack of a memorial uniform in the Bat Cave after her editorially mandated 2004 death in "Batman: War Games." Beginning life in the DCU as the daughter of the villain Cluemaster, Stephanie first appeared in Detective Comics as Spoiler, a costumed vigilante who existed to "spoil" her father's plans. After briefly serving as the fourth Robin, Stephanie was killed and remained dead for several years before Bryan Q. Miller dusted her off and made her the star of "Batgirl." Promising a more mature Steph, balancing, in the writer's words, "who she was, who she is and who she wants to be," Miller added a full supporting cast to the comic, including the original and future Batgirl Barbara Gordon as a mentor to the rash Steph, and the character rose in popularity once again.

While fans and creators debate the merits of the Steph/Babs swap, THE BAT SIGNAL lit the skies over Miller's house, summoning the current "Batgirl" writer to discuss the end of the Stephanie Brown era, touch on all the characters and where they stand heading into the final issue of his run and get his opinion on the return of Barbara Gordon to the role of Batgirl. Plus, get an exclusive first look at the final issue of the current "Batgirl" series. (more…)

Batgirl #3                                                        Birds of Prey #3                                        Nightwing #3

By now many of you have seen the ‘teaser’ of a potential Batgirl CGI series which aired during the final episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold.  Some of you may ask, WDST…that’s ‘What does Stella think?’  Well, friends and fellow Babs-lovers, I am here to tell you!

There are going to be two arguments on this issue:

The first side will simply say, “It’s a fake teaser, nothing more.  The series has done this before.”  This thinking is certainly true.  We saw earlier when the show began a 3-5 minute short with Batgirl and Batman up against Mothman.  That certainly was not a teaser for a spin-off.  We have also seen that Birds of Prey musical special written by comic scribe Gail Simone.  That was also a short, not meant to go any further.  How is this ‘teaser’ any different? (more…)

In a Q&A between retailers and DC, this question popped up:

Does The New 52 undo events or continuity that I've been reading?

Some yes, some no. But many of the great stories remain. For example – Batgirl. The Killing Joke still happened and she was Oracle. Now she will go through physical rehabilitation and become a more seasoned and nuanced character because she had these incredible and diverse experiences.

If you recall, a few days ago I posted some news about Stephanie Brown and Didio's opinion that she served a better purpose as Spoiler.  It seems that the source may have been incorrect, as two other sources have reported that Stephanie Brown was not mentioned at all during that panel.

Rawnzilla on Twitter said: Stephanie Brown was never mentioned at the meeting.

DC Women Kicking Ass also posted that two other retailers stated that Steph was not mentioned.

I apologize for the incorrect news that I posted before and shall be more careful with the sites that I cite!

Thanks to Zaius for the heads up!  Taken from BleedingCool:

Here are some things that were learned from Dan Didio at a recent event:

DC had taken a look at the comics industry as a whole and felt that the industry needed a shot in the arm.  They felt that the stories had gotten stale and too talky.  Dan recounted a book he read recently from ‘another publisher’ that had 15 pages of 9 panels of exposition [Link mine - Rich]. He felt comics used to be able to do stories that movies couldn’t. Lately, comic book movies have been doing comics better than comics have.  Dan felt that DC needed to work harder across the board to improve the product. (more…)

Last week or so I let you know that Robin would be exclusive to pre-orders of Batman: Arkham City at Best Buy.  Best Buy recently released an image of Robin and more information, including the fact that it is indeed Tim Drake!

The Best Buy listing reads:

While supplies last, pre-order the game for an exclusive downloadable Robin character. Robin is a fully playable character in the new and improved challenge mode in Batman: Arkham City. The Tim Drake Robin pack is available exclusively to fans who pre-order the game from Best Buy on Xbox 360, PC and PS3.

Robin comes complete with his own unique gadgets and special moves, and will be playable in all challenge maps in the game, as well as two additional challenge maps that are included with the pack: Black Mask Hideout and Freight Train Escape.

The pack will also contain a bonus Red Robin character skin.

Continuing from the previous episode, Donovan, Josh, and I review Detective Comics #422, #423, and #424, Batgirl #21, and Birds of Prey #12.  After my Dynamic Duo leave me, I continue with the Babs in the Tube segment, and I finish up with my literature recommendation.

The panel took place June 18th and consisted of Francis Manapul (The Flash), Jimmy Palmiotti (Jonah Hex), Gail Simone (Batgirl/Firestorm), Jeff Lemire (Frankenstein/Animal Man), Eddie Berganza (Executive Editor for DC) and Ben Abernathy (DC Digital Group Editor). The show kicked off with an intro from Berganza who revealed that brand new artwork and details would be revealed for the first time ever. Later on he poked fun at a fan comment mentioning the reboot as DC's 'new' Universe saying, "Don't call it the new universe…Somebody else did that," joked Berganza. (more…)

Newsarama.com recently went through the top ten heroes or teams whose absence will be greatly missed in the DCnU.

10 Black Lightning

DC is obviously making an effort to add diversity to its headlining roster, so why they didn't place a call to the guy who blazed trails for racially diverse heroes is curious to say the least.

While Marvel has made its earliest African-American hero, Luke Cage, a leader in the Avengers, DC's Jefferson Pierce — the hero known as Black Lightning — appears to be among the missing in September.

What makes it a little more perplexing is that the hero went through a recent revival — Black Lightning had a key role in Infinite Crisis and became part of Brad Meltzer's Justice League of America title. He even got some Grant Morrison love during the Final Crisis event, as he played lead hero in the one-shot Submit tie-in.

DC's relaunch also doesn't appear to include Black Lightning's family, which includes two female African-American superheroes — his daughters Thunder, a former member of the Outsiders, and Lightning, who was part of the Justice Society of America. (more…)

Over at Phil Noto's page, he has this lovely piece of artwork and has this to say:

Oracle 1989-2011 – My first job in comics was creating covers for DC’s Birds of Prey and and over the the course of 24 issues I drew this lovely lady a lot. And then I did some brief interior work on the Cassandra Cain Batgirl and finally did the first run of covers for the Stephanie Brown incarnation. They’ve all been great Batgirls much like Steed’s partners in the Avengers. I’ve done numerous pieces of Babs as Batgirl more so for the retro iconography and the aesthetic look of the black, yellow and red then her actual persona as Batgirl. Honestly in terms of fictional characters, I always just considered her to be Oracle. I, like many others, am very sad her to see her go, but if there’s anyone to keep her spirit alive as Batgirl once again, Gail Simone is the one to do it.

From IGN.com:

Batman: Arkham City won't be Robin-less after all, assuming of course you pre-order your copy of the game at Best Buy stores.

Months ago, when the decision was made to launch 52 new number ones, Co-Publisher Dan Didio, Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras along with DCU Executive Editor Eddie Berganza and VP-Art Direction and Design Mark Chiarello and I went over the entire proposed DCU lineup and bookmarked the characters we felt would benefit the most from a visual redesign. That initial list started at around 30 characters but quickly ballooned up as books got under way. Realizing the amount of time and effort it would take to complete the long list of designs, Mark Chiarello and I enlisted artist Cully Hamner onto the team, giving us not just another set of hands but another style altogether so we would have a variety of styles to literally draw from. Taken from Newsarama.com:

[From the editor’s desk: The news of DC Comics’ decision to revamp and relaunch their entire DC Universe of titles with new #1’s was a kick in the pants to the comic book community. As the coming changes continue to be revealed to fans daily, the reaction to the new titles, costumes, and suggested revamps to characters has been varied, but almost always strong and immediate.

One of the swiftest and most passionate responses thus far has been to the news that Barbara Gordon, a character known by her superhero alias Oracle for over twenty years, would be returning to her previous persona as Batgirl in her own solo title, under the guidance of writer Gail Simone.

The alteration to the character is not just in name and costume, of course, but in the fact Barbara Gordon is apparently being given the use of her legs back. As the intelligence specialist Oracle, Barbara spent two decades in a wheelchair after being shot in the spine and paralyzed from the waist down by the Joker in the iconic 1988 story "The Killing Joke" by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland.

Included in that response was the op/ed "ORACLE Is Stronger Than BATGIRL Will Ever Be" by Newsarama columnist/blogger Jill Pantozzi, who has used a wheelchair for 14 years and had a very strong and very personal reaction to the news.

Just hours after Jill’s response was published, she was contacted by Simone to arrange an interview about the new Batgirl title. That conversation follows below. But first… (more…)

Perhaps we are supposed to be comforted…perhaps…

Among other 'teen superhero' titles that have been released today is Teen Titans #1.  Here is the solicit:

Tim Drake is forced to step out from behind his keyboard when an international organization seeks to capture or kill super-powered teenagers. As Red Robin, he must team up with the mysterious and belligerent powerhouse thief known as Wonder Girl and a hyperactive speedster calling himself Kid Flash in TEEN TITANS #1, by Scott Lobdell and artists Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund.

It certainly seems like this is not the Teen Titans we know and love!  It also seems as if the majority of these characters are meeting for the first time!  If this is what is happening to Tim, does this bode ill for Steph?!  And what about our good friend, Bryan Q. Miller?

Thanks to Zaius for pointing my direction to this!

From The Gutters:

Taken from IGN.com:

Dick Grayson, original Robin and current Batman, will be returning to the mantle of Nightwing with DC's relaunch of superhero titles in September.

"There will be a Batman and there will be a Nightwing," said DC Comics Batman group editor Mike Marts. "And Dick Grayson will be returning to his role of Nightwing."

Nightwing #1, a new ongoing series written by Kyle Higgins with art by Eddy Barrows, finds Dick dealing with the return of Haley's Circus to Gotham City – the same big top attraction that he once performed under with his parents. In DC's official announcement, the publisher confirms that Dick's time as the Dark Knight is still relevant. It reads, "After a tenure as the Batman of Gotham, Dick Grayson resumes his mantle as Nightwing! As Dick embraces his identity, Haley's Circus, the big top where he once performed with his family, returns to Gotham – bringing with it a history of murder, mystery and superhuman evil. Nightwing must confront friends and enemies from his past as he searches for the source of an even greater evil." (more…)

Throughout today, IGN is breaking exclusive news regarding the relaunched Batman titles. In our last round of info, we debuted the Batgirl #1 cover shown below. Speculation has since run rampant about whether it's Barbara Gordon or not, and now DC has confirmed it with the following statement from writer Gail Simone on their Source blog:

"Barbara Gordon is pretty much my everything. Because of the Batman TV show, she was the reason I fell in love with superheroes. Because she was a redhead who could kick ass, she is the reason I fell in love with comics. She was always forward-looking as Batgirl, a girl who was smarter than the male characters, who had class and elegance and style, as well as tough-as-nails grit. For a long time, there was simply nothing else like her in comics, and for me and a lot of other readers, her every appearance was joyful and explosive. (more…)

From IGN.com:

Birds of Prey is taking on a bit of a change, however. Now billed as "Gotham City's covert ops team, taking down the villains other heroes can't touch," the Birds will be handled by acclaimed novelist and comics scribe Duane Swierczynski and artist Jesus Saiz.

I am rather unhappy with this bit of news…

Taken from CNN.com:

Fifty-two superheroes are getting a makeover, and comic book fans can't stop talking about it — even though they've seen this sort of thing before.

DC Comics announced Tuesday on its blog, and in exclusive interviews with USA Today, that come September, not only will many of its titles get a more modern look under respected artist Jim Lee's direction, but they'll also get renumbered, starting issue counts back at No. 1.

(DC Comics, like CNN, is owned by parent company Time Warner.)

For readers emotionally invested in the stories of superheroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, this kind of announcement can be threatening. Based on fans' Twitter reaction, it's obvious that anxiety, or at the very least skepticism, has set in.

"I've seen their attempts to revamp before," said David Whitehead, a 39-year-old client performance strategist who has been collecting comic books for 20 years.

"So, I guess I'm going in with some guarded skepticism," he said. He wonders what kind of stories DC has up its sleeve, and how interesting they could be. He hopes the iconic publisher can pull it off, he said. (more…)

If you know us, you know we both hate secrets. In fact, you might’ve seen one (or both) of us have a grin or two on a convention panel recently. Why? Because it’s hard to keep a secret as big as the news we shared yesterday.

DC Comics will be making history this September. We’ll be renumbering the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues. We’re publishing innovative storylines featuring our most iconic characters helmed by some of the most creative minds within the industry.

Not only will this initiative be compelling for existing readers, it’ll give new readers a precise entry point into our titles. And on top of that, all of these titles will be released digital day-and-date across the board.

Yesterday was just the beginning. After all, we don’t want to spoil the many surprises we have up our sleeves. It’s so important to us to make sure you maintain those feelings of excitement and unexpectedness when you pick up a new issue of our books.

We’re energized and looking forward to have you come on this journey with us as we make history this September.

What is most interesting is the fact that comics will be in paper and digital same day…I wonder how long that will last?!

Could this be true?  Taken from Bleeding Cool:

Well, it looks like there will be a new Batgirl #1 amongst the 52 relaunched books in September.

What will be different this time is that the book will star Barbara Gordon as Batgirl.

Currently taking the role of Oracle, Barbara Gordon lost the use of her legs in Killing Joke, but became the Birds Of Prey’s eye in the sky, and was handled defly in that title. There had been some possibility that control over her lower body may be slowly returning.

But who needs to go through several years of physical therapy, when you can get a relaunch! With a rejuvenated Barbara Gordon back in the Batgirl identity with a flick of a switch!

Oh and yes, there’s also a Nightwing #1. That’s all I know about that one.

Oh my…what will happen to Steph?  Not that I'm not overjoyed to see Babs as Batgirl but…what about Steph and everything she has gone through?  This is what I imagined happening, though.  Bruce is Batman; Dick Grayson is Nightwing; Barbara Gordon is Batgirl; Tim Drake is Robin.

Taken from Comic Book Resources:

Included in the 52 series will be:

- A new title starring Superman written by Grant Morrison.
- Birds of Prey #1: This new ongoing series will not feature the work of longtime "BoP" writer Gail Simone. In fact, many tried and true approaches to books will be getting a second look at DC in September.
- Teen Titans #1: The new start for the teen team will be written by "Red Robin" scribe Fabian Nicieza.
- Justice Society of America #1: – Only one of a number of current titles that will welcome a creative team shift, the future of the original superhero team will apparently not involve current writer Marc Guggenheim.
- Wonder Woman #1: Don't expect the recent changes from writer J. Michael Straczynski to stick when the Amazing Amazon sees another new #1 hit.
- Green Lantern #1: Even with a new #1, Green Lantern remains in Johns' hands, and readers can expect the effects of major crossovers like "Blackest Night" to stay in place moving forward.
- Hawkman #1: While fans have known a "Hawkman" series by James Robinson has been in the works since the writer mentioned it on a panel at New York Comic Con, Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston has been reporting the rumor that the book will be drawn by "Batman & Robin" and "Outsiders" artist Philip Tan.
- Aquaman #1: No surprises here. The already announced series featuring the sea king by Johns and Ivan Reis will be part of the relaunch wave.

Well, that's seven down…45 more titles to go!

Taken from USA Today:

DC Comics has a new strategy to be No. 1 in comic books: all-new No. 1's.

Starting this summer, the publisher will re-number its entire DC Universe of titles, revamping characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others from its 76-year history for a more modern and diverse 21st century.

The first book to be released under this new era: Justice League No. 1, out Aug. 31. The series by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee reunites the famous lineup of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. (more…)

On June 1st, I will be conducting an interview with Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty!  The main topic of discussion will be my favorite story, 'Batgirl: Year One!'  If you would like to ask this Dynamic Duo a question, you may post it here, e-mail me, or post it on the forum!

Just as with the Bryan Q. Miller interview, please limit yourself to ONE question.  Also, be sure to make the question quick and to-the-point!  These gentlemen have busy lives!  :)

I look forward to your questions!

Taken from CBR.com:

In 1941, a debutante named Sandra Knight put on a skimpy yellow bathing suit and began fighting crime as the Phantom Lady. Eighteen years later in 1959 an aviatrix named Zinda Blake would become the only female member of the World War II ace-pilot unit known as the Blackhawks. Both can trace their roots to the Golden Age: Phantom Lady was created by Quality Comics during World War II while DC Comics added Zinda to Quality's 1940s "Blackhawk" comic book after obtaining the rights to the characters. Both women went on to have over 50 years of history fighting crime within the confines of the DCU and both characters saw multiple incarnations of themselves pop up and die off in the intervening decades. This July, the Phantom Lady and and Lady Blackhawk unite again a new two-part "Birds of Prey" story arc.

Starting with issue #14, writer Marc Andreyko and artist Billy Tucci will take on "Birds of Prey" for a two-issue fill-in story that sees Phantom Lady and her granddaughter Kate "Manhunter" Spencer joining Zinda and the other Birds in Gotham. No stranger to writing strong women, Andreyko is perhaps best known for his 2004 "Manhunter" series at DC, featuring art by co-creator Jesus Saiz, who is now the permanent "Birds of Prey" artist.

Andreyko spoke to CBR about his upcoming issues, expounding on his love of legacy characters, depictions of women in comics and why World War II holds a special place in his heart. (more…)

Recently, we used the “Right to Assemble” column to take a look at the Avengers books one year in to their new iteration. It also seems that the time would be right to look in on some other books that are reaching that twelve month mark as well. One of the more storied titles to experience a relaunch last year was Birds of Prey. Beginning in the ‘90s as a string of one-shots and minis before becoming a proper series, Birds got a lengthy run until various shufflings resulted in the title being cancelled as most of the cast lit out for other books (Green Arrow/Black Canary, etc.) (more…)

By Brett Weiss

Far too many mainstream articles on comic book heroes begin with a smash-bang-boom smattering of onomatopoeia – "wham!", "pow!", "biff!", and the like – but in the case of the Batman television series from the 1960s, which famously displayed such words during fight scenes, it is entirely appropriate.

So, let’s let ’er rip: "Crash!" "Ooooff!" "Zok!" "Sploosh!" "Sock!" "Zap!" "Bam!" "Pop!" to celebrate the television show’s 45th anniversary this year.

Loved by some, reviled by others, the Batman TV show polarized audiences from the get-go with its comedic, purposely corny take on Batman and Robin. Most kids loved the program, but to this day many diehard comic book fans consider it to be nothing short of blasphemous, placing their formerly dark, formerly muscular hero in preposterous situations and having him blurt out such goofy dialogue as "Catwoman has returned to besmirch the name of our fair metropolis" and "The Riddler contrives his plots like artichokes. You have to strip off spiny leaves to reach the heart." (more…)

I was asked to create a covet to the upcoming Captain America Omnibus recently, something I was incredibly excited to do. I thought I'd post the process here….

First comes the rough layout. Finding an image that hadn't been done before was incredibly hard, he's been around a long time and there are so many iconic shots. I put down a few different ideas and this was the one chosen. I wanted to get a sense of the science behind Cap's birth as well as him being born ready for action.

In this special, non-Babs related episode, I, along with Dustin and Joe from 'The Batman Universe,' and Michael Bailey from 'Views from the Longbox,' add commentary to Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the 2010 DC animated movie. Synch this episode with your DVD and you can follow along with us!

While this episode does not directly relate to Babs, it definitely has ties to the character for me, as this movie has a connection to the scrapped 'Batgirl: Year One' DTV.

Why is this episode 17.5, you may ask? Well, as I recommend the TPB 'Superman/Batman: Supergirl' on episode 17, and then follow it up with a recommendation for this movie, I thought it had closer ties to that episode! Enjoy!

“DC Nation on Cartoon Network will be the first-ever dedicated broadcast destination to showcase the depth and breadth of the DC Universe,” said Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “We and our partners at WBTV are thrilled that fans will be able to immerse themselves in DC’s phenomenal stories, experience a wide spectrum of amazing characters and stay up-to-date on the latest happenings of the world’s greatest superheroes and their creators, both on-air and online.”

As we love and support Lee Garbett, I thought I would post this interview with him and John Layman from Marvel.com:

It’s a dimension where dreams come true and heroes find their hearts’ desires—but at what price?

This Wednesday marks the release of writer Bryan Q. Millers Batgirl 19, an issue in which “the “Order of the Scythe unleashes its first weapon in their war on Batgirl”. Miller was kind enough  to do an email interview with me last week. I was surprised he was able to make the time, as I found out in the course of our discussion last week was also when he officially cleaned out his Smallville offices, where he served as executive story editor in the show’s final season. In addition to discussing Miller’s thoughts on Batgirl, we also delve into the collaborative aspect of writing Smallville. Miller also takes this interview as an opportunity to ask fans of the book to help spread the word about how great a series it is. As a fan of the series myself, I hope word of mouth on the series continues to grow and agree with Miller’s belief that “Stephanie Brown is ready for a bigger spotlight”. (more…)

As I returned home from my four days in Utah, I was greeted with the sad news that the creator Dwayne McDuffie has passed away.

Taken from CBR.com:

CBR News has learned that comic writer, animation producer and respected industry veteran Dwayne McDuffie passed away. The cause of death and specific details are unknown at this time.

A native of Detroit, McDuffie officially joined the comics industry as part of Marvel Comics editorial in the late '80s. While working on special projects for the publisher, he quickly made his name as a writer creating series such as "Damage Control" and helping to redefine the Deathlok character to fan and critical acclaim. He soon left the staff to become a full time freelance writer, becoming a voice in the industry for diversity, particularly fighting against stereotypical portrayals of people of color on the comic book page. Someone once said “Valentine’s Day is just a made-up day. But so is Wednesday. Also, I think gravity is made up.”

That someone? Gail Simone.

Hmmm, that doesn’t exactly bode well for Huntress and Catman’s upcoming first date, does it? We asked Gail, is this going to be a disastrous first date?

Here’s what she had to say about BIRDS OF PREY issue 11:

“The most requested date in BIRDS OF PREY history happens in this issue. It’s mostly about shy glances over a shared milkshake, and holding hands chastely in a lovely dewy meadow while parasols twirl slowly in the gentle breeze of Autumnal air.

“Well, no, not REALLY, these are the two lustiest, toughest members of the Birds and the Secret Six, so it’s really more about sharp pointy things and bad behavior!”

Bad behavior? From Catman and Huntress?

What sort of things does Babs need to work on? What does 'Team Batgirl' mean, exactly? I answer these questions and more on the latest episode. After running through some comments and news I review Detective Comics #414 and #415, Batgirl #17, and Birds of Prey #8. Taken from comicvine.com:

If you have been reading DC Comics' Birds of Prey series then you, like me, have been greatly anticipating the third installment of the four issue arc The Death of Oracle. We're all waiting to see what it could mean for the future of Barbara Gordon and the rest of the 'Birds.' As we slowly come closer to the finale of the arc, it's hard not to wonder what the meaning behind The Death of Oracle is. Does it imply the literal death of Barbara Gordon or does it mean that Barbara Gordon will no longer lead the Birds of Prey as Oracle?  Will she will take on the identity of another character? Is it possible that Barbara Gordon will walk again?

Back in 2009, DC Comics released a three issue mini series entitled Oracle: The Cure, leading the majority of the reader base to believe that by the end of the series, Oracle could be out of the wheelchair she has relied on for the last 23 years. Obviously, that did not happen. The idea is not improbable as far as the scope of comics is concerned, but is it really a possible outcome? Thinking back to previous major events in comics, we have watched countless characters in the DC universe die and eventually return; just look at Brightest Day. The question is, do readers want to see Barbara out of a wheelchair again, and is it something that DC is ready to publish?

The Birds of Prey team first launched in 1999 and featured Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary. The three not only worked together, but evolved from being teammates to close friends who relied on one another though difficult times. The series was eventually canceled in 2009 after a ten year run, which is really not bad considering the state of comics. After a break for a year, DC brought Gail Simone back to the Birds of Prey and re-launched the series in July of 2010. Taking into account the success of the series, it might be safe to say that the likelihood of Oracle's death is rather unlikely. Not only is she the team's leader and the glue that holds them together, but one could argue that she is far too valuable an asset to die so soon after the re-launch of this series. That still leaves the question, what does The Death of Oracle mean and what will it mean for the Birds of Prey team? Well, who better than to ask than the source, right? We caught up with Gail Simone to find out exactly that.

Taken from CBR:

When Bruce Wayne returned and secretly confronted his cohorts during DC Comics' "The Road Home" series of one-shots, testing their abilities and in essence their right to wear the Bat Symbol, current Batgirl Stephanie Brown responded in a way that surprised everyone — including herself — and simultaneously asserted herself worthy of the mantle. She slapped Batman in the face.

Daughter of the small-time criminal Cluemaster, Stephanie first introduced herself to the Bat Family as the rookie crime-fighter known as Spoiler, acting against her father's wishes and eventually alongside the dynamic duo. She went on to not only form a romantic relationship with then-Robin Tim Drake, but eventually donned the Robin costume herself for a brief period of time. After an apparent — but later revealed as faked — death, Stephanie disappeared from the Bat books for a while, resurfacing during the "Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul" crossover once again under the Spoiler identity. However, Steph graduated to the big leagues after Bruce Wayne's "death," taking on the role of the newest Batgirl in her very own ongoing series.

Since donning on the cape and cowl, Stephanie has formed a close relationship with both former Batgirl Barbara Gordon and daughter of the supervillain The Calculator, Wendy Harris, both of whom act as her point women during missions. To complicate matters, along with her nights as Batgirl, Steph spends her days as a college student while desperately attempting to keep both identities in balance.

As THE BAT SIGNAL lights the metaphorical skies of Comic Book Resources once again, "Batgirl" writer Bryan Q. Miller answers the call to give the rundown on his plans for the title in the coming months, what makes Stephanie Brown a relatable character and why readers won't be seeing her pulling up to school in a brand new Ferrari anytime soon.

Merry Christmas, from Steph, Babs, and all of us here at BtO!

I find myself in a difficult position reviewing this musical; not only do I have a comic book background, but I also have a musical theatre background. I must, therefore, look at “Turn Off the Dark” from these two angles.

    Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark

Peter Parker: Reeve Carney (u/s Matthew James Thomas)

    Mary Jane: Jennifer Damiano

    Arachne: Natalie Mendoza

    Norman Osborn: Patrick Page

The Geeks: T.V. Carpio; Mat Devine; Gideon Glick; Jonathan Schwartz

I will keep all commentary pertaining only to the musical. Let’s just say it was a great (albeit a little depressing) day with a lot of little side stories that I could share with you.

I wanted to stake out the theatre before the actual show time so that I would know where the stage door was (after Broadway shows, devoted fans may desire to stand outside of the stage door and wait for the actors to come outside and sign the playbills). I found what I thought was the stage door (oh, the sorrow I would encounter) and my friend and I ventured inside the vestibule just to check out the entrance of the theatre. Upon entering, I saw that Reeve Carney would NOT be coming on for the matinee show. Instead, we would be seeing Matthew James Thomas. I was already slightly disappointed because I wanted to see the show in all its glory.

OK, let us now fast forward to the show. The curtain for the show (as some friends of mine saw via picture message) was amazing. It shows Spider-Man, a falling Mary Jane, and Green Goblin. The curtain was raised and the show began. If it was not clear by the fact that Bono and the Edge have been constantly advertised as having composed the music, the first notes and the rockers 5 feet away from me (one of which being Reeve Carney’s brother) made it clear that this was going to be a rock-musical, in line with “Rent” and “Next to Normal.” (more…)

Over at The Dixonverse, Chuck Dixon shows some artwork that was supposed to run in a Christmas issue of Birds of Prey 10 years ago. "It features what is basically a dream sequence in which Babs re-imagine her and Dinah’s life as a WWII Era aviation newspaper strip. It was to be drawan by Butch Guice who was looking forward to paying homage to his (and my) idols of comics past like Milton Caniff and Frank Robbins."

Yes! December 19th is the rapidly approaching birthday date for the BtO podcast! Since I will not be anywhere near my computer on that day (in fact, I will be in or around NYC after seeing Spider-Man the Musical), I knew that I would have to choose another date!

    *drum roll* SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5th @ 100PM E.S.T
(+5 for my British friends, -3 for my West Coast friends)

I will be conducting this via Skype (which is a free program). Just add my username (BatgirltoOracle) and call in! I look forward to speaking with you!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!
    Stella

What does "Death of Oracle" mean? Whose acceptance of Barbara's superhero identity meant more: Batman or Black Canary? Should there be two Batgirls? I answer these thought-provoking questions and more, on this episode! I review Detective Comics #408 and #409, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home: Batgirl and Bruce Wayne: The Road Home: Oracle. Plus, I give my literature recommendation, a DVD recommendation, a podcast recommendation, AND I tease a little surprise for BtO's birthday next month!

Ah, yes! It is that time again! Solicitations for February!

    BIRDS OF PREY #9

Written by Gail Simone, art by Ardian Syaf and Vicene Cifuentes, cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

The game-changing "Death of Oracle" storyline continues! Black Canary finally confronts her inner demons as the Calculator's army and creepy new villainess Mortis take their ultimate revenge on Oracle. This massive story reverberates throughout Gotham City — and beyond!

    32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Feb. 9. (more…)

Thanks again to my friend, Zaius, for the find! Taken from DCU: The Source

"Bruce Wayne travelled through time, a living, temporal bomb – teeming with highly dangerous Omega energy. He was a caveman, a pirate, a pilgrim, a cowboy, a gumshoe… something with computer tentacles from the far future… And when he finally got home, when Bruce Wayne finally beat death, beat fate, conquered time itself, what happened?

BATGIRL SLAPPED HIM IN THE FACE.

Right across that beautiful, battle-scarred, chiseled chin of his. It was a gut reaction. He put her through a test she knew she didn’t need, after a year of Stephanie proving to the entire world that she deserved a second chance. She was offended. Disgusted. And in that moment… she had a natural, human reaction. And then what happened after that? (more…)

Thanks to our friend and reviewer Zaius for this find!

In a 90 second interview on Newsarama.com, Gail Simone says things like "Game Changer" and ripples felt "across the DCU" when asked about the upcoming arc, "Death of Oracle." Ruh-roh! You can view the video here.

What does this means for Babs? Be sure to check out this month's BtO episode and hear one listener's thoughts.

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

    Hello, friends! Happy Halloween!

As I look outside of my window and see the beautiful Fall season take shape, I am suddenly struck with an idea. Today is, in fact, Halloween, but sadly, the BtO Boards do not reflect this. My co-creator, Noctis, and I had discussed an idea when the boards were first created that we would have different backgrounds/themes. I would really like to start to do this, and who better to give me a design than you! I would love to have all of you creative people out there create backgrounds for the BtO boards.

    What am I looking for?

    1. Any, and ALL, incarnations of Batgirl! Babs, Cass, Steph…comics, tv, cartoons…
    2. The background can be 'normal' or…
    3. The background can pull in the holidays or seasons! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day, Easter, July 4th, or Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, etc.

I really hope that I get many wonderful submissions because I am ready to show off the talents that I know many of you have. Let's make BtO ours!

You can e-mail submissions to me at batgirltooracle@gmail.com or just send me a link to an online photo album. The current background has a resolution size of 1024 x 819!

Fly on, Babs lovers! Fly on and draw on!

For those of you who may follow me on Twitter, you may have seen that I went to a comic convention this Saturday. It is just a local show with comics, toys, and some guest (though I never know who they are). This was the same convention that, in the summer, I acquired Detective Comics #359 (the first appearance of Babs!)

I was quite lucky this time as well, though I must admit that I did not come away with as much Babs stuff as last time. Here is my list of goodies:

Batgirl Plush from BTAS (YES! Now I have a Batgirl to put by my computer, just like Babs!)
    Spider-Man Plush
    BTAS Season 1 (Unopened!)
    Mary Jane (Complete Mini-Series)
Kitty Pryde and Wolverine (Complete Mini-Series)
Kitty Pryde: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Complete Mini-Series)
    Batman/Superman: Supergirl Hardcover
    Iron Fist Hardcover
    The Watchmen

    Detective Comics #482
    Batman Family #19

All this, mind you, for $52! As I was waiting for the convention to get started, I began thinking about SDCC 2011 and whether or not I should go…only time will tell!

    Have a wonderful Sunday!

Taken from ComicsContinuum.com: DC Comics has announced an initiative for January where titles will focus on characters and spotlight logos for each.

"This January, we;re putting the focus squarely on the characters and iconic heroes of the DCU," said DCU Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. "Not only will we tell new stories some of the more-deserving with special one-shots, but we'll be giving every title in the line a unique treatment that puts the spotlight on the heroes and villains that populate the DC Universe."

DC also announced one-shot spotlights for characters in the DCU.

What will we see in January?

    BATMAN BEYOND #1

Written by Adam Beechen, art by Ryan Benjamin and John Stanisci, cover by Dustin Nguyen.

Batman Beyond becomes an ongoing series! Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne are stronger than ever after the battle with "Hush" brought their alliance close to the breaking point. But now a super-powered criminal has gotten in way over his head — and the whole Justice League has come to Neo-Gotham to hunt him down! To top it all off, the crook's taken hostagesÉ including Terry's mom! It's the start of a story that will change Terry's life — and the Beyond universe — forever.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Jan. 5.

This looks good! I'll think seriously before actually putting it on my pull-list, but I always enjoyed this version of Batman. It is coming out at a good time as the Batman: Beyond Complete Season is coming out in November!

    BIRDS OF PREY #8

Written by Gail Simone, art by Ardian Syaf and Vicene Cifuentes, cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

The stunning "Death of Oracle" arc continues, with complications that will resonate through the DC Universe! And find out more about Mortis, the most twisted Birds of Prey villain ever, as she sets her sights on Hawk and Dove in this Batman Incorporated tie-in!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Jan. 12.

Oooh! Artgerm is doing covers for Birds of Prey?! How cool! Oh, no…a tie-in. Do I have to buy Batman, Inc. now?

    BATGIRL #17

Written by Bryan Q. Miller, art by Pere Perez, cover by Dustin Nguyen.

Batgirl has been given her first sanctioned Batman Incorporated assignment solving a series of high-profile kidnappings, and she's thrilled! Well, she was until Damian Wayne decided to ride shotgun. Can the Dysfunctional Duo stop fighting long enough to save the children of Gotham City's elite?

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Jan. 12.

I had just spoken to Bryan Q. Miller, recently, and he told me to be on the look out for this cover! What a triumphant moment for Steph! Having a great cover with her symbol behind her! Yay! *squee*

I hope you all are enjoying the start of Fall! I love the smell of Pumpkin Spice!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

"Batman/Superman: Apocalypse" and "Batgirl: Year One the Motion Comic" are two topics which I discuss at the beginning of this hour. Kimberley Rockmore joins me from the Watchtower Newsdesk, and shares some small screen news. Plus, I review Detective Comics #406 and #407, Batgirl #14, and Birds of Prey #5. I finish off the episode with my literature recommendation, and Thomas Matis pops on at the end for a few words on Batgirl #14.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

Just under the wire! In this September episode, I talk a little about my teaching job, explain why Barbara Gordon and Peter Parker would not work as a couple, and share some exciting news about Batgirl: Year One! I then review Detective Comics #404 and #405, Batgirl #13, and Birds of Prey #4, as well as give my literature recommendation for the month. Enjoy, and please forgive my sleep-deprivation-induced ramblings!

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

Thanks to Gerard for pointing my attention to this!

    Taken from The Source:

Starting in December, the Birds of Prey will get a new member – to their creative team, that is.

Hot off a stint on GREEN LANTERN CORPS and BRIGHTEST DAY, Ardian Syaf steps in as the regular artist on the series, joining forces with regular writer Gail Simone. And Syaf is stepping in just in time, as the series continues to kick things into high gear, with a new arc starting in December titled “The Death of Oracle.” (more…)

Ah, yes, it is that time again! And look! I'm early…I think! Not too much in the way of books that I will be getting, but I am LOVING the covers!

    BATGIRL #16

Written by Bryan Q. Miller, art by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, cover by Nguyen.

The "Order of the Scythe" has drawn first blood, framing Batgirl for a crime she didn't commit. Can she outrun Gotham City's Finest long enough to prove her innocence? The birth of Batgirl's gallery of rogues begins here as "The Lesson" continues!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Dec. 8.

Is this for real?! It certainly looks legit! It makes me happy to see Tim Drake and, though I would prefer to see Stephanie as Batgirl, I'm just glad that there is a Batgirl in the game (if it's true). What do you think? Could you see these characters in the game? Are you as taken with the image as me?

What's this? I'm late? Well…have I mentioned I got a teaching job? Anywho, here are the highlights for November!

So, apparently with the return of Bruce Wayne comes an entire cluster you-know-what of Batman titles…I feel sorry for my friends who will try to get all of them!

    BATMAN, INC. #1

Written by Grant Morrison, art by Yanick Paquette, covers by Paquette and Andy Kubert.

Grant Morrison continues his earth-shattering run on the Batman titles with this exciting, new ongoing series! Batman, Inc.. marks the next stage of evolution for The Dark Knight. This can't-miss series will star not just Bruce Wayne as Batman, but also a huge number of guest-stars!

32 pages, $3.99, in stores on Nov. 3.

Well, I will not be picking this up, but I feel like it will probably feature some great team-ups. To me, it seems like it is going to be Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I believe Steph will make an appearance at some point, plus some other cast favorites.

    BATMAN/CATWOMAN: FOLLOW THE MONEY #1

Written, art and cover by Howard Chaykin.

The Cavalier Ð that's the Z-lister with the swords, right? So how'd he manage to frame Catwoman for a run of burglaries? And how on Earth did he manage the more spectacular crime of cleaning out the Wayne Enterprises pension fund and framing Bruce Wayne for the deed? However impressive he may appear to be, The Cavalier will quickly learn that frame-ups like that cut both ways, as both Batman and Catwoman begin tracking the Gotham City villain in this stand-alone one-shot from comics legend Howard Chaykin!

56 pages, $4.99, in stores on Nov. 3.

This could either be really good…or really bad! If Catwoman/Batman is written correctly, then there will be some really good dynamics and back-and-forths going on. I wonder if this is an ongoing or not…could this be the start of a relationship?

    BATWOMAN #0

Written by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, art by Williams, Amy Reeder and Richard Friends, covers by Williams and Reeder.

"I suspect that Batwoman is socialite Kate Kane. I intend to prove it beyond a shadow. I need to know if she can be trusted, what her motivations are. I'm going undercover." Batman: Mission Log Entry 2756

Featuring a unique story composition that combines the art of Williams and Reeder, this special #0 issue acts as a new introduction into the life of Batwoman! Things pick up roughly where the Batwoman: Elegy HC left off, and this issue acts as a primer for the upcoming new series featuring multiple creators!

32 pages, $3.99, in stores on Nov. 24.

Ah, Batwoman. If I had not cut my comic list with an axe, I would consider picking this up. I recommend people try this. The character is bright, smart, and one whom I really respected when I read her.

    BATGIRL #14

Written by Bryan Q. Miller, art by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, cover by Nguyen.

The unsinkable Stephanie Brown's second semester at Gotham U. starts like any other — new classes, new allies, a vigilante stalker Ð everything a gal could want! But what Gotham City's Batgirl isn't prepared for is the arrival of the mysterious Order of the Scythe. Who are they, and why have they set their sights on her? The Lesson begins here!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Nov. 10.

So begins the TRUE beginning of Steph's second year…at least artistically! I'm looking forward to Nguyen and his art. One of my top books, by far!

    BIRDS OF PREY #6

Written by Gail Simone, art by Alvin Lee, cover by Alina Urusov.

Dinah Lance struggles to clear herself of murder charges, leaving Huntress and Lady Blackhawk in Thailand to face the invincible Shiva without the aid of the Black Canary! And a major moment occurs in the lives of Hawk and Dove!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Nov. 10.

Frankly, I'm just interested to see how the Birds get themselves out of this! It's like those 30min shows where the hero is in trouble in minute 25 and you just have no idea if he or she will make it…gripping!

BATGIRL: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD TP

Written by Dennis O'Neil and others, art by Gil Kane, Terry Dodson and others, cover by Alex Ross.

Batgirl takes center stage in this collection, which includes her 1967 debut and various stories through the Ô90s! Includes stories from DETECTIVE COMICS #359, 396, 400, 422, 423 and 424, BATMAN FAMILY #1 and 9, LEGENDS OF THE DC UNIVERSE #10 and 11 and BATMAN CHRONICLES #9.

160 pages, $19.99, in stores on Dec. 15.

All I have to say is….YESSSSS!!!

After all of these issues, and the others that you can find on other sites, my one question is this:

Where is Dick Grayson, and what part does he play in the new Bat-verse? Will there be two Bats? I guess we'll find out!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

"Ch-ch-ch-changes!" What do I think about the Batgirl from 'The Batman' series? In what areas does Stephanie need growth? What are my favorite Batgirl moments? I answer these questions and more on the latest episode. I also review Detective Comics #400 and #401, Batgirl #12, and Birds of Prey #3. Plus, I give my literary recommendation and share some personal news.

Thanks to Steve J. Rogers for getting the Denny O'Neill tag at the beginning!

As I sit here in Iowa ready to pull my hair out since a teaching job fell into my lab and starts in 10 days and I'm not even in my home state, I feel like it is as good a time as ever to share a bit of news. While my heart is heavy now that Lee Garbett will no longer be the main penciller on Batgirl, I am excited with the news that Dustin Nguyen will be joining Bryan Q. Miller in November as the artist. In an interview taken from CBR: (more…)

Yikes! October may be the time to break the piggy bank, friends! I'm sure you've already seen the DC solicitations for October but here is where I break down what I think is necessary for a Batgirl/Barbara Gordon fan!

BRUCE WAYNE — THE ROAD HOME: BATGIRL #1

Written by Bryan Q. Miller, art by Pere Perez, cover by Shane Davis.

Batgirl no more? Is Stephanie Brown's brief tenure as Batgirl in jeopardy now that Bruce Wayne has returned? Or will Bruce's homecoming mean bigger and better things for Gotham City's premier heroine?

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Oct. 13.

Well, after falling off of the face of the earth, I'm happy to return to my website. Have you been sad, reader, to check on this site and see no new updates for a while? I apologize! I feel like I have been going non-stop…plus I've encountered even more woe-is-me technical problems. Alas! I shall spare you the whine and dance routine, however.

I have recently returned from NYC where I saw six Broadway shows (Next to Normal, Lend Me a Tenor, The Addams Family, Million Dollar Quartet, Promises, Promises, and Lion King) in five days. I perused Midtown Comics (found nothing I needed, sadly), met up with a few Crawl Spacers (I'll be sure to share a picture), and had a great time! I've since decided to start auditioning again and I'm very excited about that…

But…what has all this to do with BtO?! Well, nothing. So, in actual news, BtO has recently (right after the Bryan Q. Miller interview, in fact) joined Twitter. You can follow me…us…it…via @BatgirltoOracle. I'd like to thank my ever-faithful friend Zaius, and Mr. Miller for pushing me towards Twitter. If it helps get the word out for BtO, then I am satisfied. I'm also glad at the reception of my interview with Mr. Miller. I'm glad that people are enjoying it and learning from it as well. I hope that it is the first of many!

I shall be away next week again, this time to Iowa, but another episode is soon to come following my return. I thank-you for your patience and once again apologize for my prolonged absence.

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

I had the great pleasure of speaking with Mr. Bryan Q. Miller concerning his run on Batgirl. We discuss what it is like to work with Lee Garbett, the supporting cast of Batgirl, the villains, Stephanie working with other heroes, and we even briefly discuss Cassandra Cain. All this and more, plus listener questions. I really enjoyed speaking with Mr. Miller, and I learned a great deal!

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

In this review-only episode I talk about Detective Comics #396 and #397, Batgirl #11, and Birds of Prey Vol. 2 #2. Short, sweet, and to the point!

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

Am I ever going to get a co-host? Am I dreading Nightwing Annual #2? And where exactly are Barbara Gordon (Sr.) and James Gordon Jr.? I answer these questions and more! Kimberley Rockmore reports on Batman: Year One DTV, the rumors surrounding White Canary, and a surprise involving Bryan Q. Miller. I review Batman #214, Detective Comics #392 and #393, and Birds of Prey vol. 2 #1! I then wrap up the show with my literary recommendation and a special character spotlight on X-23.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

Ita vero! (Yes, indeed!) Mr. Bryan Q. Miller has agreed to come on BtO! He has also kindly agreed to answer questions from you, the listeners. Please follow the following guidelines:

    1. NO questions about Smallville. Mr. Miller has already told me that he cannot discuss anything Smallville related. This is a Batgirl podcast anyway! ;)

    2. NO rambling questions. As this is the first guest I'd like it to be as problem-free as possible and to not take up a lot of Mr. Miller's time. Please make the questions short, sweet, and to the point!

    3. LIMIT OF 3 QUESTIONS! I love answering your questions but I don't want to scare away our guest or make this a taxing event. I also don't want to have to delete questions. Make the list no longer than 3 questions! (In the event of an overload of questions, I do reserve the right to edit the number allowed per person.)

Thanks in advance, friends! I'm quite excited! Let's make Mr. Miller feel welcome!

Go here to post a question, or e-mail me!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

As of approximately 1100 hours today, I sent in my letters–hand-signed and with a "Confidential" sticker on the envelope–to the "Big Wigs" at Warner Home Video. Pray or cross your fingers that the recipients read with an open mind and reconsider their position. Thank-you for the enormous help that you all have been thus far.

We are not out of the woods yet! Keep signing the petition and keep passing along the word! Let's see this through and get an "affirmative" on the Batgirl: Year One movie!

In the words of the great Gorf, Bird's the word!
    Stella

Is it just me, or does time seem to fly and we always seem to be receiving solicitations so quickly after we've just seen the previous solicitations? Maybe it is just me!

    BIRDS OF PREY #5

Written by Gail Simone, art by Alvin Lee, cover by Alina Urusov.

Two Birds track down a missing team member in Thailand…where someone is hunting them to make sure they never return! Plus, the shocking events of BRIGHTEST DAY continue to rock Hawk and Dove, the newest recruits to Oracle's organization!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Sept. 15.

Well…only #5 and it seems like Black Canary is SOL! The cover is interesting and certainly has a different feel to it. It reminds me somewhat of an Anime-style. I'm most interested to see how Simone is able to add Hawk and Dove to a team which already has a great amount of chemistry.

    BATGIRL #14

Written by Bryan Q. Miller, art by Lee Garbett and Trevor Scott, cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

It's terror in the third dimension starring Batgirl, Supergirl and Dracula and Dracula, and Dracula! When Supergirl decides to get away from it all and visit Stephanie Brown on the campus of Gotham City University, a quiet, relaxing weekend turns into a monster movie mash-up! After a science experiment goes horribly wrong, 24 black-and-white Draculas are brought to life, and Batgirl and Supergirl are forced to become vampire hunters in order to stop an army of the celluloid undead!

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Sept. 8.

Hehe, I'm excited about this! I think that it's time for Batgirl to have a team-up, and whom is better to have it with than Supergirl?! I like that Steph is getting recognition outside of the Bat-circle. This issue, sadly, could be the last time that we see the wonderful Mr. Garbett on pencils. I hope to see him back on this title soon!

    X-23 #1

Written by MARJORIE LIU, penciled by WILL CONRAD, cover by DANNI SHINYA LUO Variant Cover by MARKO DJURDJEVIC Variant Cover by GABRIELE DELL'OTTO Women of Marvel Variant by JELENA KEVIC-DJURDJEVIC

After the events of Second Coming and the stunning conclusion to X-Force, X-23 strikes out on her own in this all-new ongoing series,

Written by best-selling author MARJORIE LIU, spinning out of the events of Wolverine #1! X-23 has never had an easy relationship with the rest of the X-Men, but when she learns someone has taken down Wolverine, she must step up to fill his shoes.

    40 pages, $3.99.

I'm including this in the BtO solicits because I will most likely praise X-23 on the next episode of BtO. This should be a great series, and if Liu's Black Widow #1-2 is anything to base it on, it will be!

That's it for now! Fly on, Babs lovers!

In this non-Babs related episode, I, along with special guest George Berryman, add commentary to Wonder Woman, the 2009 DC animated movie. Synch this episode with your DVD and you can follow along with us!

There is some great discussion before and after the movie not only concerning Wonder Woman and her mythos, but also the great potential for Batgirl: Year One the animated movie.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

Thanks to Zaius, my foreign correspondent, for pointing me to this. Taken from Broken Frontier.

Debuting as the Spoiler as an antagonist for Tim Drake in Robin, Stephanie Brown's time in the DC Universe has been full of twists and turns. She was a short-lived Robin herself before her apparent death at the hands of the original Black Mask some years back. Since her return from the dead last year she has taken on the mantle of Batgirl, under the tutelage of Barbara Gordon, despite misgivings from much of the Batman Family. WIth a trade paperback collecting the first seven issues of her ongoing series coming out in July, Broken Frontier took some time out to chat with series writer Bryan Q. Miller about Stephanie's journey so far and what's coming up for her in the months ahead… (more…)

Well…isn't this preview page from Batgirl #12 just a dream for any Dick/Babs shipper? Too bad all is probably NOT what it seems. Still…a girl can dream!

This past Saturday I had a graduation party to celebrate my successful end at Mr. Jefferson's University of Virginia. Besides having a great deal of fun with my dearest friends, I realized a little something about myself. If any of you know Brad Douglas, the webmaster over at Spider-Man Crawl Space, you know that he absolutely hates people misspelling 'Spider-Man' as 'Spiderman.' In a similar vein, I apparently get rather heated when someone says "Hey, it's Batwoman!" when it is NOT Batwoman! Not that I don't like Batwoman, I do! It's just that Batgirl and Batwoman are two COMPLETELY different women! It's like calling Superman Batman or vice versa! So, in the future, it's best not to approach me at a party and say, "Is that Batwoman on the cake?" You would not fair well, my friend…not well at all! ;)

As I write this, there are 388 signatures on the "Put Batgirl: Year One Back in Production" petition! Yes! Thanks for all of the support! Thanks, especially, to those who have helped to spread the word:

    Bat-Blog
Jeffrey O'Taylor Brien host of the Superman Homepage
Shagg Matthews host of Once Upon a Geek
Jill aka The Nerdy Bird host of Has Boobs, Reads Comics
spiderfan970 over at Spider-Man Crawl Space (who spread the word which ended up getting Lauren Montgomery to comment and share the true culprits behind the decision!)
Walter 'That Guy' host of BTP
Dustin and everyone over at The Batman Universe

I hope that I am not forgetting anyone…thanks to all of the promoters of the petition and all of you who have signed it! It has not even been a month since I started the petition and it is gaining speed. It would be fantastic to get 1000 signatures before the end of the summer, at which time I will be sending all of my letters. Is that too much? I think not! Let's do it, people! Let's get Batgirl: Year One back among the world of the living!

I have never been this proactive before, but I believe in this cause, and I believe that with no Batgirl movie, and no more female superhero movies slated for production, that DC Animated will begin to backslide. This petition is not only for Babs, but for ANY DC superheroine! Please spread the word!

    Thank-you for your time!

In this extremely depressing episode, I announce a contest to create a new Batgirl to Oracle Intro/Opening, answer a few questions, and give a moment of silence for my recently-deceased external hard drive. I review World's Finest Comics #176, Detective Comics #384, Detective Comics #385, Batgirl #8, and Red Robin #10. I apologize for the bare quality of the episode, I did the best with what I had.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

It's good to know that, despite all the crap I've had to deal with these past few weeks, life does not really care about your little hard drive problems and can get worse.

    From Bruce Timm:

"'Wonder Woman’s' sales started out extremely slow and then over time were eventually able to catch up to probably 'Justice League: New Frontier.'" said Timm. "The Exec’s decided because it wasn’t able to sell quickly right away, whereas 'Justice League' was, that there wouldn’t be any more female super hero films right now. We were developing and hoping to get started on a 'Batgirl' film based on 'Year One,' but because of 'Wonder Woman’s' slow sales start, that won’t be happening now."

Oh, Babs fans…if you only knew what I've been through! I have the entirety of Episode 6 recorded. "Why hasn't it been published?" one may ask. Allow me to tell you the nightmare I am going through… (more…)

Thanks to Zaius (my news-buddy) for pointing me to these solicits:

Hey there! I've got some exciting news for you readers/listeners!

First, there was a comic convention near where I live this past Saturday. My ultimate goal was to polish off my Birds of Prey collection, but I came away with so much more!

    Batman Family #4
    Batman Family #5
    Batman Family #7
    Detective Comics #481
    Suicide Squad #49
Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey #1
    Birds of Prey: Wolves #1
Birds of Prey Secret Files 2003
Birds of Prey #52-65 (now I'm only missing #15 and some one-shots!)
    Showcase '94 #12

Iron Fist #1-5 (Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker)
    Batgirl: Year 1 #1-3, 5
Nightwing #104-106 (last half of Nightwing: Year One)

But what I'm most excited about? I now have in my possession, Detective Comics #359, the first appearance of my idol, Babs! Yayz!

And my other bit of news? Batgirl to Oracle now has a legitimate–and, might I add, a great–sponsor: Mile High Comics! I'm particularly excited about this partnership because MHC prides itself in having a HUGE stock of vintage comics. This is fitting for a podcast that is starting from the Silver Age! You can use the link on my page to get to their site. I can attest to the quality of their service as I bought a bunch of 80s comics from them for research. From the bottom of my heart, thank-you Mile High Comics!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!
    Stella

And the blacked-out figures are…*drum roll*

Hawk and Dove?! What do you think about this little bit of news? I have to say that I am a little disappointed, but I will reserve final judgment until I actually read the issue.

Thanks to Zaius for pointing me to this!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

Thanks to Zaius for alerting me about this on the BtO: MB.

First, Lee Garbett (whom I am very fond of because of his art in Batgirl) posted some pencils from an upcoming issue on his Twitter.

Well, if you have not noticed by now the new tab at the top of the page, nor have you listened to episode 5 and heard the "grand opening ceremony," you are missing out! On March 17, 2010, I unveiled the Batgirl to Oracle: Message Board. I hope that this will become a great forum for discussing every incarnation of Batgirl! Of course I am a huge fan of Babs, but we have Cassandra fans and Stephanie fans there as well. Join me and my friends/listeners!

In this episode I discuss some Batgirl collectibles that are soon to be released, what topics I want Gail Simone to tackle, and who exactly IS Barbara's arch-nemesis? I review Detective Comics #371, Justice League of America #60, Brave and the Bold #78, and Batgirl #7. Finally, I round out the episode with my literature recommendation, the unveiling of the Batgirl to Oracle: The Message Board, and a special guest appearance by Bubba Moose!

Thanks to Kevin for the tip about this image. This is the cover to Birds of Prey #2. As you can see there is the trifecta of Huntress, Black Canary, and Lady Blackhawk on the cover, along with The Penguin? What's up with the Penguin? Could he be the bulky blacked-out character from the cover of #1? Is this going to tie in with what's been happening in Batman? Is that a shadow behind them all that looks like Spoiler, or is it another blacked-out figure? I suppose only time will tell…

Gail Simone is leaving Wonder Woman, which leads me to believe that she is all-in on this book. I'm pretty sure it will be one of the best books coming out!

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

If you haven't noticed, I was recently forced to update to a Podomatic Pro account. Apparently, the BtO podcast had gotten so popular that it exceeded its bandwidth. Along with this account comes the ability to customize your podcast page. Check out the new look! I tried to completely customize it, but the CSS code was not easy to work with so I decided to go the easier route. The main thing I do not like is the fact that I cannot manipulate the color scheme for the font. As a result, the title is a little obscured. Comments? Criticisms? Let me know!

Also, some of you have recognized that something is going on and being teased. What is "It?" Well, that I will not tell you. What I can tell you is that it has to do with the BtO Podcast and that it will lead to much discussion. Wait and see…

    Fly on, Babs lovers!

I, along with special guest and friend Kevin Cushing, discuss the nine issue mini-series Batgirl: Year One. Some of the topics we touch on are the heavy foreshadowing, Barbara's relationship with Dick Grayson, Marcos Martin's ingenious art, and how old is Babs, really? Plus I round out the episode with a literary recommendation and a little tease. Stay tuned, also, for a post scriptum of sorts.

    BIRDS OF PREY #1
On sale MAY 19 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US
Written by GAIL SIMONE • Art and cover by ED BENES • 1:25 Variant cover by CLIFF CHIANG
Soaring out of BRIGHTEST DAY, the Birds are back in town! Because you demanded it, fan-favorites Gail Simone (WONDER WOMAN, SECRET SIX) and Ed Benes (JUSTICE LEAGUE, GREEN LANTERN) reunite to reinvent the book where they made their explosive debut as a team. Oracle, Black Canary, Huntress and Lady Blackhawk all return to Gotham City where they belong – and they’ve brought a couple of new friends (or are they foes?) along with them!
Guest-starring a major Bat-villain and the first appearance of the most dangerous, most twisted new Birds villain ever!

There are a few changes that happened in the past hour or so. One of which you can plainly see on the right side of my page. Yes, I have started drinking the Kool-Aid and I created a Face Book page for Batgirl to Oracle. Become a fan!…please!

Also, I have also created a PayPal account for the podcast. This came at the insistence of one of the listeners, and I suppose it is a good idea in case I do happen to find a real-life sponsor. You can donate (if you want) via my Podomatic page, or right here on the site. Now, as a caveat (because it makes me nervous soliciting donations), ALL of the proceeds earned will go directly toward the podcast, either in producing the podcast or buying research material (ie. comics) for it. I will in no way be using the donations for corrupt or personal purposes, nor will I attempt to resurrect Julius Caesar or Juliet Burke.

Thank-you in advance for anything, everything, or nothing. I feel everyone's support every time I post a new episode.

    Fly on, Babs lovers!
    Stella

You all have until February 19th to send me questions (if you have any) so that they make it onto the next episode. Thanks!

As I have said, Episode 4 will be a very special surprise and I am very excited about it! I hope that you all are as well!

    Ex animo,
    Stella

In this episode I discuss Stephanie's "first" trip to the Batcave and what it means and the return of Birds of Prey, the comic series. I review Detective Comics #369 and Batman #197, which round out the year of 1967, and Batgirl #4, #5, and #6. I give my literary recommendation and tease a little surprise for Episode 4.

In the third of a series of "What If?" images, PeteParker adds a mask to a green-eyed, red-haired Summer.

Once I placed my order through Mail Order Comics I noticed that I had to order Red Robin #10 in order to complete the arc begun in Batgirl #8, so it was no surprise when Newsarama.com posted an interview with the writers of the two series, Chris Yost and Bryan Q. Miller, respectively. Thanks to Zaius for pointing me to the interview. You can read the full interview here.

The dynamic duo discusses what brings the past-couple back together, how things have changed, and how, in the moment of pushing forward with your life you always find the past coming to your doorstep and knocking.

Sure you've been reading about this all over the place, but why not from this place? Follow the link below to the full interview of Gail Simone. She discusses her return, Ed Benes, drama, romance, a$-kickery, and all things that are Birds of Prey! What should certainly be good news for many is the fact that no knowledge of back issues are required. New to the game? Now is the perfect time to jump on. Read the full interview here.

From everyone here at Batgirl to Oracle (ie. me), welcome back Ms. Simone!

In Episode 2, I answered a question concerning Summer Glau as Batgirl. I have received a Photoshopped image of her with a mask on from Noctis and, over at the Spider-Man Crawl Space Message Board, PeteParker did another Photoshop of Glau with red hair. What do you guys think? Could she pull it off?

Apparently 2010 is the year of Babs which equates to being the year of AWESOMENESS! Recently solicited was The Brave and the Bold #33:

    BRAVE AND THE BOLD #33
On sale APRIL 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US
    Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

    Cover by JESUS SAIZ
Oh yes, it’s ladies’ night! Batgirl, Wonder Woman and Zatanna enjoy a nice, peaceful evening on the town that absolutely won’t be interrupted by any kind of superheroic hijinks whatsoever… and if you believe that, there’s a giant bronze globe in Metropolis we’d like to sell you!

While from the text it may seem that this could be any Batgirl and most likely the contemporary one, after looking at the cover it is pretty definite that it is the Barbara Gordon incarnation. This could be an untold story of yesteryear, but I am still very excited! Add another issue to the list!

Many comments on the news of BoP returning have listed Misfit as a potential character to fit the silhouette. This seems logical, especially when thinking about Babs' connection to Misfit and the three degrees separating her from Steph. However, the main question remains…why is the outline so large and bulky?

    From Newsarama.com:

"DC Entertainment's announcements of the DCU 2010 landscape continue on today courtesy of DCU Blog The Source, with news of the return of a book, team, and creative team. Birds of Prey, canceled in the reshuffling of the Batman family of comics in Spring 2009, is returning Spring 2010. (more…)

In this episode I review Detective Comics #363, World's Finest Comics #169, and the recent Batgirl issues #2 and #3. I also answer a few questions and give my literary recommendation.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

As you can see to your right, I added two more links to friendly sites that I have become acquainted with. The Batman Universe delves into anything and everything The Dark Knight related, having reviews, a forum, news, and a podcast. Escape from Tomorrow is a blog that deals with comics, tv, and movies. The host, Zaius, is also writing reviews on the new Batgirl series, so if you desire to hear a second opinion, be sure to read those! They are well done!

I hope that these two sites, along with my own, will become great collaborators.

P.S. Thank-you for all the reviews, comments, and critiques from the first episode of the podcast. I am currently preparing for my second episode. Have a Merry Christmas, all!

    Ex animo,
    Stella

In this momentous first episode, I thank the people who were most helpful to me, talk about myself, answer the question "Why Babs?," discuss my expectations for the show, Batgirl news, reviews of Detective Comics #359 and Batgirl Vol 2. #1 and my literature recommendation.

Don't worry…I'm working on correcting the wind in the next episode.

Download the episode directly or listen to it here.

I recently finished my show notes for episode one of my podcast. My plans are to record tomorrow and hopefully have the landmark episode up mid-week. Stay tuned!

Finally! My main research material and guide for all things Babs finally arrived in the mail. I was waiting until I received my Showcase: Batgirl to start recording, and now that I have it I am that much closer to producing my first episode. Too bad my Batgirl issues are not with me or I would do it within the next two weeks. I'll still hold on to January 2010 as being the latest date that I will post my first show, but I am hopeful that it will come in the week or so before January.

    Ex animo,
    Stella

I have started composing my notes for episode 1. Just the fact of doing this alone means that I am getting close to actually recording the first, landmark episode.

I'm getting really excited and it's shaping up to be a great podcast!

    Ex animo,
    Stella

Sorry I have not updated the main page lately, I have been under the weather. I may or may not have contracted this sickness from the Paramore concert that I went to…but it was worth it!

The tentative date for the first episode of the podcast is January 2010. The episode could come out earlier than that, but not later. Right now I will be tackling Bab's history in chronological order, beginning with her first appearance in 1967. As this is "my baby," so to speak, at least the first episode will be run by myself alone. I already have plans for future guests, and I may, at a later date, take on a co-host. We shall see what the future holds.

I'm actually really surprised by everything that has come from a single, passing thought in my mind. Once again, I would really like to extend my thanks to everyone who has helped me so far!

Haha, what's ironic is that I have not even posted an episode on Podomatic and I already have 60 friends…what's that about?

    Ex animo,
    Stella

Today, due to me unfortunately waking up at 3:24am, I was able to add some snazzy links to the sidebar. These are links for sites of my friends and associates. I'd like to give a big shout-out to George who was instrumental in helping me tackle some of the coding here, as well and spending time with me trying to figure out how to embed audio. Thanks, George! You're the greatest!

I've been working on the links for the past day or so. As of right now, the Books link takes you to my ultimate reading list, the Podcast link takes you directly to my Podomatic page (no episodes, as of yet) and the Contact link is now set up so you can e-mail me directly and comment about the site or the podcast when it is finally produced. Thank-you for your continued patience!

    Ex animo,
    Stella

Welcome! If you're reading this, you have either navigated to this site by accident, searching for information on a girl named "Barbara Gordon" who sits in front of you in CHEM 121, or, you are nervously anticipating the arrival of "Batgirl to Oracle: The Barbara Gordon Podcast." I for one certainly hope it is the latter. This will be the main site for the page. Little by little I will add to the page until the triumphant day that I will post the first podcast. You can track my progress by visiting this blog. Please leave any and all comments that you may have either here, or on the Spider-Man Crawl Space Message Board (Off Comic Topic Section). Later, I will set up an e-mail account to which you can send all of your comments.

    Ex animo,
    Stella
